During the night, your core temperature drops by a few degrees, which helps you stay asleep. If your room’s temperature is too high, you may wake up throughout the night, even if you aren’t physically uncomfortable. For most people, the ideal temperature for sleeping is around 70 degrees. If your home is usually a little warmer than this, try turning the thermostat down a few degrees before going to bed.
While having a drink or two before bed may make you feel drowsy, alcohol diminishes the quality of your sleep. If you’re having trouble falling asleep at night, try taking a warm shower, reading a book, or meditating.
Regular exercise helps you relieve stress, manage weight, and contributes to a good night’s sleep. However, it also provides an energy boost, so plan to exercise earlier in the day. If you don’t have time in the morning, finish exercising at least a few hours before bedtime.
No matter how exhausted you might be, thinking about work, family issues, and other stressors can keep you up late into the night. Dealing with stress by talking to a therapist, practicing yoga, or engaging in favorite activities throughout the day will help improve the quality of your sleep at night.
