The World Health Organization (WHO) defines physical activity as “any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that require energy expenditure – includes activities undertaken while working, playing, doing household chores, travelling, and engaging in  recreational activities.” Whenever the intensity level is moderate or stronger, physical activity offer plenty of health benefits.

Unfortunately, our lives have become more sedentary, affecting our body health. Studies found that work-related physical activity and use of active transit have been decreasing while leisure-time physical activity (e.g., fitness and sports) has been increasing. (Global Wellness Institute, 2020)

  • In  wealthier nations, 26% of men and 35% of women show sufficient physical activity levels. However, in developing countries, 12% of men and 24% were not active (World Health Organization, 2020).

 

  • Individuals with insufficient physical activity have a 20% to 30% increased risk of death than those who are. (World Health Organization, 2020).

 

  • Physical inactivity is the fourth leading cause of death globally, responsible for more than 5 million deaths each year. (World Health Organization, 2020).

 

  • The global economic burden of physical inactivity was estimated at $67.5 billion in 2013. (Global Wellness Institute2018)

 

  • The top 5 countries with the highest participation rate for Recreational Physical Activity are Australia, Taiwan, Norway, New Zealand and Iceland. (Global Wellness Institute2018)

 

  • The top 3 countries with the highest rate for fitness participation are Sweden, the United States and Iceland. (Global Wellness Institute2018)
